The collection of these stories was spurred by Dan Chapman and Pam Shepherd Otten, who have teamed up to write a history of the Carmel Dads’ Club.
The story of the CDC begins with the hiring of Dick Nyers as Carmel High School’s varsity football coach in 1958. Coach Nyers felt strongly that a quality “feeder system” that would train youth in sports would lead to strong CHS football players in the future. Simultaneously, local dads met in the home of Charles Hubley to discuss how they could provide their young sons with the opportunity to play sports in a structured setting. They were organizing what would become known as the Carmel Dad’s Club. These dedicated people came together and their efforts made the CDC — and Carmel — what it is today. The paperback book costs $14.95. Copies are available at the Monon Depot museum or you may order a copy by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Carmel Dads’ Club and the Carmel Clay Historical Society. To learn more about the Carmel Dads’ Club, visit their website: www.carmeldadsclub.org.
